Davao Oriental


Background

Davao Oriental was created by virtue of Republic Act No. 4076 last May 8, 1967 and took effect on July 1, 1967. It is located in the Southeastern part of Mindanao, bounded by the Pacific Ocean in the East, by Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur on the North, by Davao Province on the West and by Davao Gulf and Celebes Sea on the South

It comprises 516,446 hectares representing 26% of the total land area of Region XI and 1.72% of the total and area of the Philippines.

The province has jurisdiction over 11 municipalities, namely Baganga, Banaybanay, Boston, Caraga, Cateel, Governor Generoso, Lupon, Manay, Mati, San Isidro and Tarragona with Mati as its capital town. It has also 2 congressional districts and 183 barangays.

Of the total land area of 516,446, 61% or 315,600 hectares is classified forestland and 39% or 200,846 hectares remaining is alienable and disposable land. There are 53 barangays within the forestland with an estimated upland population of 105,915.


Land Classification

The province terrain which is characterized by extensive mountain ranges with uneven distribution of plateaus, extensive swamps and lowlands. Slope 0-18 percent area is 161,146 hectares while 30-50 percent slope has an area of 202,833 hectares and the remaining 152,467 hectares which is typified as steep hills and mountain/ranges.

Soil Type

Most of the province’s soils are highly suitable for agricultural purposes, which ranges from 0-18 slope having an area of 161,146 hectares. The largest area totaling to 202,834 hectares is 30-50 above percent slope characterized by steep hills and mountain/ranges.
