Compostella Valley



Background

On January 30, 1998, Republic Act No. 8470 was enacted creating the province of Compostela Valley from the province of Davao del Norte.  Compostela Valley Province lies between 8°00’00” to 7°00’00” East latitude and between 125°37’00” to 125°20’00” North longitude.  It is bounded on the north by Agusan del Sur; on the east and south by Davao Oriental; by the Island Garden City of Samal on the southwest; by New Corella and Tagum city on the west and Kapalong and Asuncion on the northwest part.

Compostela Valley has a total land area of 466,692 hectares or 24% to the total land area of Region XI.  The province is divided into two (2) congressional districts with and area of 222,828 has. and 243,865 has. for the 1st District and 2nd District, respectively.  It has jurisdiction over eleven (11) municipalities and two hundred thirty-five (235) barangays with a total population of 607,037.  Its density is 1,243.31 persons per sq. km. and an annual growth rate of 5.34.

Of the 466,693 hectares land area of the province, 313,596 or 67% is forestland while 153,097 hectares 33% is alienable and disposable A & D lands.  There are 50 barangays identified within forestlands with an estimated population of 69,494 persons.

Land Classification

The province terrain is characterized as moderate to very steep. Generally, the slope is classified as 0-3 % or level, 3-8% or undulating, 8-18% or rolling, 18-30 or hilly, 20-50 or mountainous and 50% above or steep to very steep. The province forest cover of 313,596 hectares is categorized as production and protection with 165,674 and 147,922 hectares, respectively.
