Vice Mayor Sarah Duterte Leads Mangrove Planting

Davao City Vice Mayor Inday Sarah Duterte leads the mangrove planting and coastal clean-up activity today at Purok Malamboon, Brgy. 76-A in Bucana this city in line with regional launching of the Green Philippine Program (GPP) under the Coastal and Mangrove thematic sites.

Inday Sarah together with the different stakeholders coming from the LGU, NGOs, GOs, business sectors and the academe planted around 1,500 bakauan lalaki mangrove propagules in the area.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) - XI Regional Technical Director for Research Bonifacio A. Apura explained that the mangrove planting formed part of the 1.4 million tree seedling to be planted by the department in region XI. Nationwide, the target of the DENR is to plant 20 million tree seedlings.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was also signed between the DENR-XI and Brgy. 76-A and the Malamboan Fisherfolk Associations, the main adopters of the mangroves planted in the area. The MOA spells that the department will provide technical assistance and the seedlings while the adopters will plant, maintain and protect the newly planted mangroves.

Barangay Captain Celso A. Tizon gave his assurance that they will protect the planted mangrove propagules. They will conduct sticking activity to protect the mangroves from strong winds and tides as well as from the garbage coming from the sea.
