During the event, a one-day collection and buying of recyclable materials was done in order to promote year-round recycling, waste segregation, waste reduction and materials recovery.
"With RCE, we do not promote proper waste management but also enjoy the economic benefits of recycling," Reyes said. Reyes further said that he is seeking vigorous support of local government units (LGUs), other government agencies and the private sector.
"We are also encouraging the participation of the communities, industrial waste generators, industry and business establishments and recyclers in `closing the garbage loop' so that the solid waste and other recyclables generated from our households don't have to find their way in sanitary landfills. Instead, these will be used and re-used for other purposes," Reyes added.
